New York…The kosher restaurant industry became a center for catering this Passover but instead of at hotels moved to private homes. According to kosher restaurant expert Elan Kornblum, restaurants in New York, New Orleans, Miami and California all converted their restaurants to takeout caterers over Passover. Elegant Desserts in Williamsburg sent out a van of Kosher for Passover cakes to Maimonides Medical Center in Boro Park. Elegant was supposed to cater many Pesach programs this year, but with over 150 programs being cancelled they decided to donate their very scrumptious desserts to Hospital staff. The father and son team at Ganey Orly has been helping those on the front lines since the beginning of the pandemic. So far they have fed over 180 health care workers and provided 4,000 face masks! Other caterers and kosher food companies also donated food to “front line” personnel and to the poor through Jewish poverty organizations. According to Mr. Kornblum, many of these restaurants will continue functioning as take-out caterers well beyond the Passover holiday. They, of course could not predict when their operations would return to normal.
