Macaroons Sold for Passover Despite World War I

New York…For a while a Matzoh bakery in Ukraine continued to bake despite the Russian invasion. Rabbi Avrohom Marmorstein who has headed Kosher L’Mehadrin certification since 1989 says that even in the middle of World War 1, ads were still touting the best tasting macaroons for Passover. It was a period of crisis for Jews in Eastern Europe. The war was still raging, poverty and destruction were everywhere. Despite all this Der Haynt the Warsaw Yiddish daily newspaper was still advertising the best Pesach macaroons. Rabbi Marmorstein occasionally shares historic vignettes on kosher with the readers of Kosher Today.
