Kosher Expands Internationally

The number of countries that produce kosher certified products grew to 104 with the inclusion of the Gulf states of Dubai and Saudi Arabia. At Kosherfest 2017, the international presence was clearly felt with exhibits from more than a dozen nations including Israel, Canada, Argentina, Peru, Sri Lanka, Japan, Mexico, the UK, Spain, Italy, and South Africa amongst others.

Noteworthy:

Ft. Lauderdale, one of the nation’s busiest hubs for kosher travelers, abruptly closed a successful kosher stand. However, many new kosher food options are set to open at other airports throughout the nation in 2018…Rabbi Avi Juravel’s visit to South Dakota capped the rabbi’s nationwide visits to supervise kosher in all 50 states…Several European countries, most recently Holland, continued to face challenges on kosher slaughter… The acquisition of two Minneapolis kashrus agencies by the Chicago Rabbinical Council (cRc) was the latest consolidation of kashrus organizations in a handful of US cities.

Transitions:

The kashrus world mourned the passing of Rabbi David Steigman, 67, Senior Rabbinic Coordinator at OK Kosher, and Rabbi Meir Zlotowitz, 73, head of ArtScroll, publisher of some 26 kosher cookbooks, led by the Kosher by Design series by Susie Fishbein.
