Disgruntled Rabbis Launch New Agency in South Africa

Johannesburg, SA…According to a leading South African Jewish publication, three disgruntled former mashgichim (kosher supervisors) recently launched their own kosher hechsher in a bid to compete with the Beth Din, the country’s foremost kosher certification, the Union of Orthodox Synagogues (UOS). The board of UOS Johannesburg and the UOS Capetown management committees issued a joint statement on January 26th, saying they were unable to comment on this new hechsher, given that there was “no track record or international acceptance to reflect on”.
