I am one of those that feel a great thrill when a retro brand resurfaces. Thousands recently viewed a video showing Bernstein on Essex Street, the iconic Chinese/American restaurant on the Lower East Side that captivated generations of diners who enjoyed both the environment and the food. So it was no surprise that I kvelled when I heard that the Milky Way on Pico Robertson in Los Angeles is back. It was a thrill to talk to Leah Adler, mother of the legendary film maker Steven Spielberg. Who could forget the posters of her son’s movies that lined the walls or her gift for gab and her pleasant demeanor? Two years ago, it was the end of an era when Leah died at the age of 97. Now the Spielberg family has revived Adler’s memory with the reopening of the restaurant she ran for 40 years with husband Bernie. The homey restaurant has been undergoing an extensive overhaul both in menu and design for many months now, but is back and more charming than ever. From the framed family photographs to the movie posters of her son, dining inside really feels like stepping into Adler’s own kitchen.
