Tu B’Shvat – Another Gift-giving Season

New York…On February 10th, the kosher world will enjoy yet another gift giving season, a little more than a month before Purim, one of the biggest gift-giving seasons on the Jewish calendar. Kosher independent supermarkets are preparing to showcase exotic and regular fruit baskets, which some retailers say has also extended to corporate giving. One Brooklyn store said one of his customers routinely orders gift baskets for Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah, Tuv B’shvat, Purim and even Shavuos. He said that as recently as 5 years ago he sold nearly 100 baskets on Tuv B’shvat but this year expects to sell more than ten times that number. Tuv B’shvat is known as the Rosh Hashanah for trees and plants and it is customary to consume an exotic fruit which is not eaten year-round. Many of the gift baskets seldom leave it to fruit alone with some including assorted nuts and even wine. Several stores say that the Tuv B’shvat business has been growing by double figures each year. “Why wait when you have a very colorful and tasty holiday,” said one retailer. Many of the retailers have gone on-line in recent years and have found that it is a way of communicating with customers and encouraging repeat business.
