Chicago…A leading kosher food expert was concerned that there would be a major matzoh shortage this Passover. He wasn’t concerned about production or even Covid-19 related delays. He predicted that the growing network of kosher food banks around the country would buy up the supply before ordinary consumers had a chance to purchase what they needed. From what I have been able to learn, the food banks have become major customers for kosher underpinning the industry even more.
One retailer in a strong kosher neighborhood told me that he hardly sells any kosher milk these days because his customers get milk for free from the food banks. This relatively new development is apparently having an impact on the industry which requires much further examination. It seems that there will be plenty of the free food for Passover and certainly for those who cannot afford the fare. Stay tuned!
