Seasonal Catskills Closing but New Catskills Community Thrives

Woodbourne, NY…It was a banner year for kosher purveyors in the Catskills as the summer vacation population continues to grow. One local expert said that more than 500 new units were built in the last two years and that more than 1,000 are on the drawing board and are expected to be ready by the summer of 2023 and the latest by  in the summer of 2024. But the biggest news is that the Catskills is slowly emerging as the latest vibrant year-round kosher community. Many food establishments are now open year-round catering to the rising number of new kosher households in the Catskills. Community leaders expect the year-round community to continue to expand. In South Fallsburg, Landau’s was celebrating an extremely successful summer but also planning the inventory for the year-round residents. In Monticello, Mountain Food was completing an expansion and in Woodridge Buy Rite was relocating from its huge summer premises to its year-round store. Pizza stores in South Fallsburg, Woodridge and Monticello were planning to greet their year-round customers. The “Borscht Belt'' has suddenly become much more than borscht.
