Supermarket Executive Yakov Yarmove Honored for Promoting Israeli Products

Chicago…A crowd of over 300 people braved near-hurricane conditions to pay tribute to Yakov M. Yarmove of SuperValu, who is credited with a major expansion of kosher in a large number of the chain’s stores throughout the country. The dinner, sponsored by the America-Israel Chamber of Commerce Chicago and the America-Israel Economic Forum, took place at the Ritz Carlton on November 14th. Amongst the participants was Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Israel’s Consul General Orli Gil. Also attending were representatives of leading kosher food producers from the US and Israel. Yakov is responsible for purchasing and managing the kosher category for over 1,500 SuperValu-owned retail stores. This includes the decision to add and support hundreds of Israeli products throughout their supermarkets across the country. He is also the architect of SuperValu's "Kosher Destination Store Program" in leading Jewish population areas in the United States. In 2008, Yakov was awarded the SuperValu "Employee Excellence Award" for successfully growing this category to new heights and for making the company a recognized industry leader in the kosher segment of the retail food business. And in 2002, Supermarket News, a leading industry publication, named Yakov to its list of 50 Industry Visionaries.
