Schenectady NY…Kosher travelers who have been to Albany or to Niagara Falls in Upstate New York know these two supermarket brand names well. Both the Price Chopper and Tops chains have at least one flagship store that can serve as a model kosher store within a store. Now Price Chopper/Market 32 and Tops Markets have announced that they will merge creating a powerful alliance between the two independent grocery chains and nearly doubling their collective footprint in the Northeast. Together the two chains will own nearly 300 Price Chopper, Market 32, one Market Bistro and Tops Markets stores and collectively employ more than 30,000 people. The Price Chopper store in Colonie was a destination for kosher travelers. In fact, Yakov Yarmove, the long-time kosher veteran in supermarkets now with Jewel-Osco in Evanston, Il, got his start in the Colonie store. Price Chopper was owned and operated for many years by the well-known Golub family. The Top’s store in Buffalo NY has Nissan’s Kosher Deli and Grocery. It features an eat-in or take-out glatt kosher deli, kosher groceries, kosher catering and the only kosher butcher in the Buffalo/Niagara area. It is supervised by the Buffalo Va’ad Kashruth.
