Passover Behind Them, Retailers Turn Attention to Shavuos and Dairy

NEW YORK — With Passover and restocking behind them, kosher retailers are preparing for the two-day holiday of Shavuos (Jewish harvest festival, the Feast of Weeks - eve of May 14th – May 16th ). Many retailers also celebrated Yom Hatzmaut – Israel’s Independence Day last week with many Israeli products being sold as “specials.” At Jewel Osco in Chicago, many Osem products were promoted. At other stores specializing in Israeli products in New York, Miami and Los Angeles, Israelis bought many Israeli brands and Mediterranean foods to celebrate the holiday.

Shavuos is a particularly interesting holiday for merchandising kosher because it is customary to eat at least one dairy meal, making it ideal for manufacturers and distributors of fish, cheese, yogurt, blintzes and other non-meat items. Yet, other meals include the traditional fish and meat products.
