More Kosher Options Come to Shopping Malls and Airports

LANCASTER, PACentral PA’S Koshermart, which has provided kosher food in Central Pennsylvania for over 17 years, is opening next month in the Tanger Shopping Outlets on Lincoln Highway. Menu offerings will include flame broiled hamburgers, char grilled boneless chicken fillet, Hot Dogs, Curly Fries, and soft drinks. Central Pa’s Kosher Mart already provides kosher food at Hersheypark and Cherry Crest Farm. Kashrus observers say that malls have been slow to adopt kosher although in many areas, particularly in the New York tri-state area, kosher shoppers represent a sizable number of overall shoppers. A kosher option is available at the large Woodbury Common.

Kosher travelers say that grabbing a quick bite to eat at an airport has become much easier these days with the widespread availability of the Sabra hummus, now owned by Pepsico, which has in a short time seen sales soar to $800 million. The COR of Toronto recently announced that kosher food became available at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. Amongst the locations that sell the kosher sandwiches and wraps is the CIBO Express Gourmet Market, which also offers the kosher fare at JFK International Airport and LaGuardia in New York. The kosher fare in New York is under the certification of the Star-K Kosher Certification. Despite its heavy usage by kosher travelers, JFK does not have a glatt kosher restaurant or vending machines, both of which were available in the early days of Terminal 4.
