Midwest Bakery Expands Sales of Kosher Breads to Major Supermarket Chains

Milwaukee - Ask most people how bread is made and they are likely to say flour, water, yeast and perhaps a bit of sugar, salt and oil. If you’re still thinking that, think again. Walk into a supermarket today and you are likely to find dozens of bread types, not just your plain, “boring” white bread. Bread has taken on a whole new meaning from brown rice, whole grain, corn, bean and hemp breads to naan, pita, and rotti. One bread category that is fast gaining popularity among health conscious eaters is sprouted bread, with promises of easier digestibility, lower glycemic index, higher protein and fiber levels, and more nutrients than their regular unsprouted sister.

One sprouted grain industry leader, Milwaukee-based Angelic Bakehouse, is answering the call of our fast becoming germination nation. The company boasts sprouted breads, wraps and rolls. Angelic is significantly expanding its presence across the country signing agreements with four Ahold USA divisions and D’Agostino and DeCicco Family Markets. Angelic’s products such as their popular Flatzza and Flatzza Buddy, the first packaged sprouted grain pizza crust, will be carried in 265 additional northeastern retail outlets.

Ahold USA, which includes Giant Carlisle, Giant Landover, Stop & Shop New England, and Stop & Shop New York Metro, is carving out a niche as an innovator in quality, experience and convenience which suits Angelic’s vision. “The Ahold USA stores are a natural fit for Angelic Bakehouse,” says Angelic’s CEO and president Jenny Marino. “They’ve reshaped the food industry; we’re doing the same for bread. Consumers don’t want to trade taste for nutrition any longer. Our sprouted grain, GMO-free products solve that problem.” In addition to pioneering the superstore concept, Ahold stores were among the first to include nutritional labeling as part of the shelf price label.

Ahold will also be bringing on Angelic’s bestselling product, sprouted seven-grain bread – both regular and reduced sodium.  “We have a love affair with food, and it¹s obvious that D’Agostino’s and DeCicco’s do too,” says Marino. “We are all excited to bring Angelic’s uniquely delicious and nutritious products to their customers." Angelic’s products are all certified kosher by OK Kosher Certification and Pas Yisroel.
