Many Mashgichim (Kosher Supervisors) Face Layoffs

New York…With the news that many kosher restaurants and caterers are shuttering and indeed firing their staff, Vaadim (local kashrus committees) and larger kosher supervision (hashgacha) agencies will need to furlough or fire their onsite mashgichim. According to several rabbinical sources, many of those being let go are an at risk population. Many of them are older, have health issues, or are immunocompromised. They make minimum wage, get no benefits, and live on meager pay, short hours, and government entitlements. They are indeed the backbone of the certifications for catering, kosher markets, and kosher restaurants. Even higher level mashgichim and rabbinic coordinators may end up taking pay cuts.
