Chicago…Plans are well underway for the annual conference of Vaadim (local kashrus councils) in early July. Sponsored by the Association of Kashrus Organizations (AKO), the Vaadim typically are involved in supervising local kashrus concerns as well as larger plants located in their jurisdictions. Kashrus officials say that the Vaadim are increasingly playing an important role on the national kashrus scene. The July meeting, like their predecessors, discuss many common issues such as employment policies, local certifications such as catering, and interfacing with the national agencies. Several rabbis told Kosher Today that they constantly face a need for mashgichim (supervisors). Others are even able to provide inspection personnel for national certifications.
