Lag BÕOmer Ushers in Barbecue Season

CHICAGO — Lag B’Omer (the 33rd day of the counting of the Omer) which falls this Sunday is the latest “holiday” for many retailers. This year, it appears the occasion is being used as an opportunity to promote grilling. “We have your Lag B’Omer grilling needs” reads the ad this week for Jewel Osco here. The ad, of course, focuses on hot dogs and cold cuts.

At Evergreen in Monsey, shoppers are greeted with a huge Barbecue display. In one small store in Boro Park, bags of charcoal rest against the front window. So has Lag B’Omer replaced Memorial Day as the official launch date for the barbecue season. It appears not, say kosher retailers. It is simply the way the calendar came out this year that Lag B’Omer fell on May 18th, a little more than a week from Memorial Day. That will leave two weeks for the marketing of dairy items and fish for the Shavuos holiday, June 4-5.
