Kosher Stores Launch BBQ Season as Summer Season Looms…and an Early Rosh Hashanah

Brooklyn…With the summer season now only a few weeks away, supermarkets and other kosher food stores have one eye on the coming weeks and another on the unusually early Rosh Hashanah (eve of Labor Day, September 6th). In the short term, many stores are already displaying an extensive array of BBQ related deli and meat items as well as condiments and bakeries. Others are preparing for the early arrival of the Nine Days (mourning period for the destruction of the First and Second Temples) which begins on July 11th and is a time when mostly dairy and pareve products are eaten. But unlike other years, Rosh Hashanah falls on the night of Labor Day, which means that there will not be a return to school period prior to the Jewish holidays. All the Jewish holidays fall in September this year.
