Kashrus Agencies go Into High Gear in Advance of Passover

NEW YORK — The products for Passover have all been certified and are in fact on shelves all over the country. Yet, for kashrus agencies, this is the busiest time of the year as they assist kosher consumers in preparing for the 8-day holiday. As in the past, the agencies publish directories, sponsor special seminars, update their Websites, man hotlines and even distribute apps. The Orthodox Union is extending the hours of its hotline. “This is the second year the OU Kosher Hotline will be open on Sunday,” remarked Rabbi Moshe Elefant, OU Kosher chief operating officer.  “Last year, we received 150 calls on erev Pesach alone, when the OU Kosher Hotline was open for three hours,” shared Rabbi Eli Eleff, OU Kosher rabbinic coordinator and consumer relations administrator.  “Callers thanked us profusely for being open to help with their questions; and many last-minute calls came from rabbis, as were calls from people who had been told by their rabbi to contact the OU.
