European Rabbis Intensify Efforts to Preserve Schechita in Europe

Warsaw…European rabbis meeting here focused on preserving kosher slaughter (schechita) on the continent, a perennial threat to Jews living in Europe. The Conference of European Rabbis (CER) particularly focused on the most recent ban on schechita which was in the Netherlands. CER President Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt said his organization would not rest "until this discriminatory, intolerant and hateful bill" was overturned. Shechita was prohibited by the Nazis when they occupied Poland. A source close to the kashrus agencies in Europe told KosherToday that animal rights extremists were becoming particularly bold in courting parliamentarians across the European continent.. The European Union itself has rejected attempts to adopt a universal standard across the continent. Said the source: “So what else is new; so long as there are Jews here schechita will be under attack despite an overwhelming body of scientific evidence of the humaneness of kosher slaughter.”
