European Jewry Hopes Populism will not Drag Down Kosher

Paris- European Jews seemingly are never out of the woods when it comes to schechita (kosher slaughter). Every time there is a level of comfort that schechita will not be curtailed, a new threat surfaces. French Jews are concerned that far right candidate Marine Le Pen will actually make good on her threat to curtail schechita in France, if elected. Some European Jews are concerned that the growing shift to national populism will result in a reversal of fortunes for schechita in other countries as well. Even in the UK, some observers are concerned that the Jews will not be protected by the standards of the European Union once BREXIT takes effect.  The concerns over schechita coincide with an overall anxt about growing anti-Semitism.
