Discounters Slowly Increase Kosher Offerings

Chicago - Merryl Strauss bought quite a few Chanukah items at Costco. The mother of two teenage daughters has been doing a good deal of her holiday shopping at the discount club store. She is not alone. An increasing number of kosher shoppers are finding a much greater variety of kosher products at discount stores like Costco, Sam’s Club, Trader Joe’s and Wal-Mart. There are also many more shoppers who shop online. Costco’s website lists over 614 different kosher products, and just over half of that falls under the grocery category. Beverages, candy and snacks make up the rest. There are many kosher items that are not online but are in select stores, most notably meats, including such brands as Empire, Meal Mart, New York Kosher Deli,  A.D. Rosenblatt, Solomon and Strauss and Teva, Costco’s in house brand Kirkland has many OU certified items. Ditto for such stores as Target, who in the past have published guides to their kosher offerings. Wal-Mart too had been steadily adding kosher certified items in their grocery sections.
