Can Shopping Malls be Saved with Kosher Food Offings?

Secaucus NJ…Even before the $5 billion American Dream mall opened there was talk about the mall’s first exclusive kosher food court. A new kosher eatery, Mike’s Burgers, was scheduled to open in the Palisades Mall. Owner Mike Krispine said he chose the West Nyack location for its convenience. As a Pomona parent, he's often felt the crunch to rush home from the mall because of the lack of kosher food options. The 150-seat spot will have a similar menu to its sister spot in Long Island. The decline of the shopping mall, largely due to on-line shopping, is one reason more malls may look to kosher. Many Orthodox Jews, particularly Chasidic Jews shun the Internet and frequent malls as a place to socialize and just “hang out” as one store in an Upstate New York mall said. Kosher has become an important incentive for gas stations, sports stadiums, and attractions, leading many to believe that malls will be next.

In Miami Beach a relatively newly built food court on Lincoln Mall features four strictly kosher restaurants. Several other malls are also considering adding kosher fare in what has become a major lure for young kosher shoppers.
