South Fallsburg NY…In the crowded aisles of Landau’s Kosher Supermarket, it is hard to visualize that the US and indeed the world is in the midst of a pandemic. The supermarket looked every bit as it did a year ago, virtually no social distancing and few masks, Eli, a young Chasidic contractor, says that there have been no new cases in Orthodox neighborhood, hence the relaxed atmosphere. “I’m not sure what the future will bring but right now, I feel that it is safe to live life as usual.” Eli’s 11-year old son would have been at a nearby sleepaway camp, but the State has forbidden such overnight facilities. Major kosher stores, including Shoprite and Wal-Mart in Monticello were also teaming with kosher customers. Foodservice purveyors have had to adjust to the new reality making up some of the void with government contracts. Several caterers have adjusted their models offering takeout and even outdoor dining.
