BREAKING NEWS: Gelato Petrini Named Best New Product in Kosherfest

NEW YORK -- A Chocolate Peanut Butter gelato made with organic soy milk, Belgian chocolate and natural creamy peanut butter was crowned the Best New Product at the annual New Product Competition, which took place on October 18th. The gelato (also winners of the best Desserts, Baked Goods, and Sweet Snacks) was one of more than 120 new products entered in the competition that will also be showcased at next month’s Kosherfest (November 12 -13, Meadowlands Exposition Center, Secaucus NJ).  

There was much about the gelato that caught the attention of the judges. Although it retained the rich taste of dairy and chocolate peanut butter, it is Lactose and gluten free. The makers of the winning product, Gelatto Petrini, based in Delray Beach FL, note that the new product will be available to both retail and foodservice markets. 

Another long awaited product won the Best New Dairy Product. Rutherford NJ based Norman’s Dairy is releasing the first Cholov Yisroel (higher kosher standard for dairy) Greek Yogurt in 6 flavors. After extensive research and development, the company managed to retain all of the health benefits of Greek Yogurt while offering a delicious tasting product.

In addition, the judges recognized new products in a number of categories. The Best New Bread, Grain, Cereal, or Cracker went to Paskesz (Brooklyn NY) for its new chocolate covered rice cakes Best New Candy to Quality Frozen Foods (Brooklyn NY) for its Torie And Howard Organic Candies; Best New Dips, Spreads, Salsas winner was Oxygen Amazon Chipotle Sauce by Oxygen Imports (Rahway NJ), which also won the Best in Jams and Preserves with its Passion Fruit Obsession); Best New Frozen Entrée  went to Ta'amti Pizza Pinwheels (Blue and White, Long Island City NY); Best New Savory Condiments, Spices, Sauce, Oils, Vinegars, Dressing & Marinades went to MIKEE Sugar Free Salad Dressings (Exotic Sauce Packaging, Inc.); Best New Giftware or Novelty Item was Royal Challettes (The Kosher Cook, Cedarhurst NY); Best New "Kosher for Passover" Product was Matzolah by Foodman (Decatur GA); Best New Meat/Seafood/Poultry Item went to Facon (a smoky and salty dry-cured beef from Jack's Gourmet, Brooklyn NY) and Best New Deli Item was the Spicy Italian Style Salami (also from Jack's Gourmet, Brooklyn NY); Best New Pasta, Rice, Beans or Soup was  Pearl Couscous with Rice, Roasted Garlic & Sun-Dried Tomatoes (OSEM USA, Englewood Cliffs NJ); Best New Savory & Salty Snack Food went to Simply Protein Chips (Wellness Foods, Toronto, Canada); Best New Wine, Beer or Spirit went to Pacifica Meritage, distributed by Royal Wines (Bayonne NJ).

The awards will be distributed on Tuesday morning November 13th during the opening hours of the show. The distinguished panel of judges included Yaakov Yarmove, SuperValu; Joel Schoenfeld, an independent food buyer based in the New York area; Marty Stein, Tree of Life and Jesse Blonder, Center for Kosher Culinary Arts.
