As Meat Shortages Increase, Kosher Holds its Own

Washington DC…While President Donald Trump exercised executive action last week to keep meat processing plants open, the supply of meat and poultry to the kosher community seems to have been stable. Kosher retailers note that they are experiencing spot shortages in meat but have certainly had an ample supply. President Trump used the Defense Production Act to classify meat processing as critical infrastructure to try to prevent a shortage of chicken and meat on supermarket shelves. According to kosher food sources there was some suspension of production due to the Corona virus pandemic in US kosher plants and the virtual closure of plants in South America contributed to the shortage. Producers like Solomon’s have turned to alternate sources like Mexico.
