Lakewood NJ…It was still more than a week to Rosh Hashanah, but you wouldn’t know it from the crowded aisles at the kosher supermarkets here. Honey products were stacked in stores like Gourmet Glatt, Season’s and Evergreen. Every section of the stores was crowded as were the checkout counters. Many kosher stores scrambled to stock up for the upcoming holidays as the summer season seemed to abruptly end because of the unusually early holidays. Many schools had resumed early to prepare their students for the coming holidays. Rosh Hashanah begins on the eve of September 5th. One kosher foodie guessed that she would be serving 23 meals during the month of September, half laughing, “and it will all be gourmet.” Some women will be following the recipes included in special sections in leading Jewish periodicals. “There will be no respite from the kitchen for almost a month,” said Malkie, a mother of 5 who just spend $1100 on her “Yom Tov” order.
