Kerestir, Hungry…With Passover only days away Moshe Yosef Friedlander who operates Reb Shayele’s Guesthouse coordinated an enormous operation to bring Passover to Jews still stranded in the war-torn Ukraine. Included in the huge shipments were more than fourteen tons of Matzoh. Truckloads of Passover foods made the trips to various entry points that were coordinated with Red Cross officials. Although there were several other rescue operations sponsored by Jewish organizations, the Kerestir effort was amongst the largest.
In addition, Kerestir itself hosted refugees from Ukraine during Passover as it has during the entire war. Kerestir has become a rescue hub for refugees fleeing the war zone as it is a hospitality center for people on legacy tours to the holy places in Eastern Europe. Friedlander’s group also arranged for a Seder in Munkacz. The city of Kerestir will be flooded by thousands of Jews who will be coming here to mark the yahrzeit (anniversary) of the saintly Reb Shayele Kerestirer on May 6th.
