New York…It isn’t often that eggs are part of the kosher story, albeit that eggs play a pivotal role in the kosher diet and even in many Jewish customs and traditions. Eggs, for example, are an integral part of the Passover Seder. Kosher adherents consume large quantities of eggs at every level, especially the significant number of Orthodox Jews with large families. Surprisingly, a recent scandal involving price gouging avoided penetrating the kosher market. New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit against Hillandale Farms, one of the country’s largest producers and wholesale distributors of eggs, for illegally gouging the prices of eggs during the coronavirus pandemic. In March and April 2020, Hillandale allegedly gouged the prices of more than four million cartons of eggs sold to major grocery store chains, U.S. military facilities, and wholesale food distributors throughout the state, charging New York customers up to four times the pre-pandemic price for one carton of eggs. On average eggs sell for about $1.27 per dozen. Kosher grocers say that they buy eggs from other sources and were not caught in the scandal.
