A Kosher Island in New Orleans Enters Fourth Decade

New Orleans – Joel Brown’s Kosher Cajun New York Deli and Grocery is now 31 years old which is quite a fete for any kosher restaurant, let alone in New Orleans. Joel’s own journey from growing up in a Conservative home to becoming a stalwart (even the Gabbai) in this small Orthodox community of about 60 families was anything but accidental. Joel studied and studied until he discovered his real calling. Whether you are a tourist checking out the French Quarter, perhaps participating in the colorful Mardi Gras celebrations, or attending one of the many  conventions in town, Kosher Cajun is a home away from home for so many. His excellent deli and fried chicken along with the traditional cole slaw and pickles make you instantly feel “at home.” In recent, years Joel expanded the store to include a good selection of kosher groceries, frozen meats, some of which he first encountered during his frequent visits to Kosherfest. Under the glatt supervision of the Louisiana Kashrut Committee headed by Rabbi Yossi Nemes, Kosher Cajun is a warm and welcoming eatery in the Gulf area. What is astonishing is that Joel can adapt to serving several dozen customers in his restaurant to catering for several thousands. He has truly found the formula that has made him the success that he is.
