New Gourmet Glatt Market in Boro Park Hopes to Live up to its Landmark Location

Brooklyn, NY…The year was 1939 when the US  was reeling from a deep depression and the administration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt had created the Federal Work Agency to put people to work. One of those projects, since designated as a national landmark, is the Thirteenth Avenue Retail Market on Boro Park’s main commercial thoroughfare. With the original façade still in place, a new 20,000 square foot supermarket, Gourmet Glatt, opened there last Tuesday. The interior was completely gutted and features a modern and spacious design with a shaped white drop ceiling below its loft-look green high ceiling that almost seems to direct shippers from the produce, deli and freshly cut fruits to the grocery aisles, takeout and 34 freezer doors. The store includes some of the features of its Cedarhurst store, notably the inclusion of “brand” stops including Ossie’s Fish Market, Schwartz Appetizing, Steinberg’s Homemade Bake Shop, Simply Sushi Café, and Nesher Fine Foods. It includes an extensive takeout section and a large fresh meat display (mostly from Alle and related meats) that allows shoppers to view the butchers at work through a large window. There was also an extensive display of Israeli products as well as heavily discounted items at the 39th Street entrance, like Osem’s Mini-Mandels and Heinz Ketchup.  Mordechai Silberstein, the store manager, emphasized that the store offers Boro Park shoppers “an unprecedented shopping experience.” Malka, a young Chasidic woman, was ecstatic over the spaciousness of the store and even complimented the low prices, which she said compared with KRM, the huge discount kosher supermarket, just across the street.
