Growing Number of Gluten-Free Passover Foods Only a Partial Solution

New York…For a growing number of Jews suffering from Celiac disease, Passover has definitely become a lot easier. In this year’s KosherToday review of new products for Passover, almost 20% of the items were listed as gluten-free, including Yehuda’s Gluten Free Toasted Onion Matzo-Style Square Line, distributed by Kedem Foods, Bayonne NJ. But nutritionists say that while the new products offer many new opportunities for meals and snacking, there is still the problem of eating real Matzah with its traditional Hamotzie blessing. Nevertheless, after satisfying the minimum requirement for matzah, Celiac sufferers can diversify to gluten-free products. The kosher market has dramatically increased its offerings of gluten-free products in the past three years as has the general market. A record $6.1 billion in gluten-free food and beverages were sold nationwide last year, up 16.9 percent from 2010, the Spins market-research firm reports. Mintel's Gluten Free Foods Report projects those sales to exceed $7 billion in 2012. There are an estimated 3 million Celiac sufferers in the US and a disproportionate number in the kosher market. Food sources say that many non-Celiac sufferers also prefer the gluten-free items because it is simply “easier” on their digestive system. With such items as noodles and pasta available for Passover, this year’s holiday should be easier for those seeking gluten-free.
