Dannon Opts Out for Passover Leaving Many Markets Without Yogurt

White Plains, NY…The Dannon Company will not produce its traditional OU yogurts for Passover, KosherToday has learned. Food sources say that the absence of the yogurts will leave a huge void in many markets that rely on the kosher for Passover products. Sources say that while Dannon produces many kosher products, indicated by a k and mention of kosher gelatin in its ingredients, only the Vanilla and Plain flavors do not include the gelatin and thus are certified by the Orthodox Union (OU). The company may have decided not to do special KP productions for just the two items. The sources say that Dannon’s actions follows decisions by other icons in recent years not to produce special Kosher for Passover items, including  Wesson, Lay’s, and Bumble Bee. The Dannon action comes at a time when the number of SKU’s for the holiday continues to increase, by one count well over 15,000. In some markets where kosher consumers opt for Cholov Yisrael brands like Mehadrin, the Dannon Passover items will not be missed. Passover in the past few years has been affected by no-shows and shortages. In recent years, the list included Barton’s, margarine, and Tam Tam’s.
