The Hunt for New Products Goes Beyond Passover

New York… Representatives of kosher food companies often appear at food shows all over the world in the hunt for “that item,” a reference to a new product that can potentially be a success in the kosher food market. Kashrus agencies, while officially not soliciting food companies are also looking for products that can be made kosher. The wave of new major brands going kosher of the ‘80’s and ‘90’s has slowed considerably. The latest round of “iconic new kosher products,” as one blogger called it, was the OU’s certification of Gatorade and Tootsie Rolls. Today, most of the new products to go kosher are in the secondary category or those that are less than iconic brands, but nevertheless significant players in the food industry. One example of such a company is Sahale Snacks, a producer of premium all-natural snacks, which recently added the symbol of the KOF-K Kosher certification. As much as kosher officials look for new products, they are even more on the hunt for what might conceivably be Kosher for Passover. Despite the fact that the Mintel research group predicts fewer new food products in 2012, the number of new items for Passover is expected to slightly increase over last year. In the general market, more convenience meals are making a debut, but in kosher, say the experts, new means more tweaking, more flavors, more mixing, more pre-this and pre-that will hopefully be seeing daylight on supermarket shelves.
