Snowbirds Bring South Florida to Life as Kosher Options Continue to Expand

Miami Beach…Although South Florida is no longer an exclusive winter paradise for Jews, there is a noticeable difference once the snowbirds converge on the area. As many as 400,000 Jews are believed to spend some time in South Florida during the winter months even as the year-round population of younger Jews continues to increase. For the myriad of kosher restaurants in the area, the challenge is to keep the operation going even in the 6-8 “quiet months,” as one restaurateur put it. Many a restaurant has closed its doors because of this challenge. Those that have managed to do well year-round have adopted a model of operation that allows them to be profitable despite the fluctuating clientele. The Rare Steakhouse on 41st Street is one such restaurant with the owners having also recently acquired and expanded the nearby Shemtov Pizzeria. Another is the Israeli and Mediterranean Grill Time in Aventura. In retail, Kastner’s, an indepenedent kosher mart is also a year-round destination, but come the winter months, the aisles are virtually impassible. Kosher Kingdom in Aventura has also developed a successful year-round model. Winn-Dixie’s Aventura store has become a major kosher stop. Although still maintaining a relatively low profile, Publix continues to add kosher offerings, including meats and bakery.
